Ben Quotes

Ben has been so fun lately.  I am really bad at writing down the funny things he says.  But here are a couple.

Ben: Mom, some of my friends have been asking me lately if I can help them.  I say yes.  But then I don't.  Because they didn't say WILL you help me.

Oh my little grammar nazi.  Derek is so proud right now.

Yesterday Ben was super concerned about the length of his arm hairs.  And the height of his forehead.  Funny how he is so concerned with his appearance.

Also my favorite right now is how he loves his new haircut.  He says, "I look so good with my jeans and the [insert whatever shirt] and my new haircut today."

He lost another tooth this week.  "I just got sick of it being loose, so I pulled it out."

He decided for one day that he wanted to wait for the tooth fairy to come until he lost a bunch of teeth.  Then the next day he changed his mind.  When the tooth fairy did come, she couldn't find the tooth (who's idea was it to put it under the pillow????).  He was confused/sad that he still had his tooth and money.

Yesterday he wrote a note the to clean room fairy and the fairy that comes to his outside fairy garden.  He is concerned that he hasn't seen them for a while.  Hopefully they make and appearance soon! (His room is usually quite tidy these days, so the clean room fairy just forgets.  I wish her possible appearance could motivate his sisters across the hall!)

Future Job Day

This week was a Spirit Day--Future Job Day.  Sarah had a field trip to UW, so she dressed in UW gear.  Ben wavered all morning, but decided  to wear the lab coat and fedora and be and "Adventurer." Libby was a movie star in her dress for the Variety Show.
I was super excited to dress up like my principal.  I "borrowed" a shirt that I gave him a few years back that he had hanging on his wall--it says "I'm a School Principal, so you know I'm smart and awesome."  He was super super tickled.  We got a couple of pictures together too...but those are on his camera.  I'll have to add them.  I'm wearing khakis and a very large white button down under the t-shirt.  On Friday he was wearing a similar outfit.  It was perfect.
Student Council is one of the straws that weighs heavily on my back.  But I did it because my kids love spirit days and being involved.  And it pays off pretty big.

Variety Show 2019

For several years the girls have been asking to be in the Variety Show at Meridian Park.  Previous years we had some false starts in trying to pull something together.  But it always came up at a busy time of year.  After last year, I promised them that they could do it this year.  Then, you know, life has been intense.  But I felt like I could keep my promise.  And I did.  (It was tough, but we made it!)
Libby was determined to sing Never Enough from Greatest Showman.  But the karaoke versions were not in a key that worked for her.  I had to ask around and figured out that I could buy a version of the song through Kennelly Keys that was in the key of C.  (I maybe could have done this myself online, but it was only $4.--although it made us late for dance one day to get it).
Our neighbor Brittain accompanied Libby.  We managed to get together a few times so she could practice.  He is insanely busy, so I'm so thankful that he made time for her!  Derek also worked with her a bunch to help with her breath control and really punching the lyrics.  I am proud of her because she did a good job handling a lot of coaching.

Sarah had the idea of doing the Pajama Time number.  I brushed her off at first.  But finally I listened to her idea, and it was perfect.  She and her friends worked on the choreography for quite a while one day.  Then I went down and helped them finalize it.  I was super proud of her idea, and her persistence in getting me to accept it.  This group had 3 or 4 rehearsals, which was pretty awesome considering how many were in the group.  We got most together for most rehearsals.  The final product turned out great.  Despite Ben's "stage fright" he did really well.  You couldn't tell that he had a care in the world!

I was in the teacher number.  It was pretty funny.  Especially funny was that we had "floss" or white strands to dance around with.  I had mine stuck in my bra so that I could pull it out later in the number.  It came loose and was trailing out under my dress.  Like a skinny piece of toilet paper stuck in my pants.  HA!
Gotta love it! I'm really glad that it's over though.

The hardest part about the whole thing was that we had to miss the MP Rhino last practice for the dress rehearsal.  Then the actual Variety Show was on the same night (and in the same building) as the Shorewood Shorecrest Match--also the Rhino Night scrimmage with Seattle Wrestling Club.  The scrimmage wasn't very well attended.  But the Shorewood Shorecrest match was INTENSE.  I'm so sad I missed it.  I got in there just in time to see Shorewood lose.  28 to 26.  The first time they have lost to Shorecrest in a long time.  Painful.  (We knew it would probably happen...they have 6 seniors.  We have 1 though, so next year...)

Anyway, I felt some sadness too, knowing that this is just the beginning.  Kids are going to be busy, and we will no longer be able to go to everyone's everything.  And that makes me feel a longing for the simpler days--when the kids had nothing going on.  Better to focus on how glad I am to have talented kids.  We will divide (when we have to) and conquer.

Happy Birthday to ME!

Yes, I'm 42.  And it was an amazing birthday.  The tradition I started the year I turned 40 of travelling on the MLK weekend around my birthday is going strong.  This year I headed to Washington DC to see Emmi's new place.  Jenn joined us.  It was just what I needed!
Derek asked what DC sites we went to.  The answer: NONE!
This was about girl time.  We went to SPA WORLD, went shopping, walked, talked, played some games, and talked some more.  It was amazing.
Jenn and Emmi were pregnant last year.  So this year, they both had babies.  It was fun to hold babies (and give them back).  And Emmi's husband Dan watched the babies a lot so that we could have girl time.  It was a great gift!
We stayed up SUPER late....but since we were on the East Coast, that was perfect for me.  1:00 am there, is only 10:00 pm here.  So I could stay up that late ;)  And I slept pretty well there (something I have been struggling to do here), so overall I got to stay up "late" and still get some rest.  The night of the eclipse was the coolest!

I got to feed Walter, Jenn's little guy, a few times. He's a great eater, so that was fun!

I got to hold and feed Atticus at time or two also.

Shopping!  Jenn wanted some new clothes, and the girls were also passionate about helping me find some more color and style for my wardrobe.  They ended up buying me a super cute pant suit for my birthday.

We ate at the Rusty Scupper the night I flew in.  It wasn't far from BWI.  Yummy!

Back together!

Me wedged between the two babies.  It was such fun!
It was so healing to be able to process 2018 together.  Here's to a better 2019--and to the power of friends to help lift you up! (Hoping for San Diego in 2020--finally somewhere warm!)
I ended up getting an extra night in DC because all the flights out of DC were delayed.  Luckily I had a training on Tuesday, so I already had a sub plan.  I flew direct to Seattle.  Derek picked me up, I showered, changed, and went straight to the training.

My 19 for 2019

Last year I didn't set any specific goals.  Just wanted to "Enjoy the Journey."  And I had a rough time with that.  It was hard.  By the end of the year I think I had some revelation on that...and I hope to continue to enjoy the journey with all it's ups and downs.

This year, I have chosen the 1 word theme: Emerge.  I want to come out from under the pain and headaches I have been experiencing.  I want to be the person and wife and mother that isn't weighed down.  I'm working on this.  I'm excited.

I wrote a 19 for 2019 list to help me move forward toward my goal and created an accountability group with some friends that I love to help me do it.

1.  Call my mom daily/weekly (daily right now--I just love hearing her voice)
2.  Read The Case Against Sugar
3.  Read a finance book (haven't decided which one yet).
4.  Do physical therapy to help my neck, shoulder, and hip
5. Get a mammogram (which I have already checked off!)
6. Underreact to problems (less swearing, staying more calm)
7. Weekly budget for expenditures (monitor every Sunday)
8.  Hand off Rhinos
9.  Renew Teaching Cert (need all Clock Hours by June)
10.  Get ACE CECs (for fitness cert--need 20 hours by Feb. 2020)
11.  Improve family nutrition
12.  Monthly time with each kid
13. Go to the temple monthly (January--check!)
14.  Drink more water (1 bottle before lunch, 1 before after school snack.)
15. Monthly Budget Review
16. Finish Adult Piano Book
17.  Write in gratitude journal most days
18. Say morning family prayers (alert in calendar to help)
19. Create an accountability group of friends to encourage progress :)

So, let's do this 2019.
Did a biking adventure yesterday with Ben while the girls were at dance.  Fun mommy will come out at least one time per month!

Back to the Grind!

We jumped back into life this week.  School, drama club, dance, wrestling club, choir, wrestling matches, doctors appts, etc.  It was busy.  But I am reminded that I do like routine.
I am happy that we are all back at school.
I am happy that Shorewood beat Lynnwood on Thursday.
I am happy that Derek's cold is getting better.
I am happy that there are some more options for me to explore to help with my headaches.
I am happy that we had sun  yesterday.  I really needed that!
I am happy that I have a 19 for 2019 list that I am excited about, and a couple of friends to meet with to create some accountability.  We had a great time at the spa on Friday night.
I am happy that I have such an amazing family.
I am happy that I love tidying up (and that Netflix has a series about it... ;)
I am happy that the doctors cleared up my mom's infection and that they closed her chest again yesterday.  This time with some titanium plates and screws.
I am happy that I got to talk to her almost every day last week.
I am happy for a clean slate, a fresh start.

I hope you have some things you are happy about in this new year!

2nd Place at the Shoreline Invitational

I haven't really had time for much wrestling this season.  (The season started the week my mom had her initial surgery).  But I was all in for the Shoreline Invitation since it was at Shorewood this year.  I helped with the food/volunteer spreadsheet.  I helped with set up on Friday night.
I was there from (almost) start to finish on Saturday.
It was a fun day--and especially great to take home 2nd place...so close to 1st.

Happy New Year!

We had our first New Year's Eve with Derek in many many years.  We made fondue with actual cheese (not the stuff in a bottle).  We had yummy chocolate fondue too.  We played some games (Happy Salmon, a new favorite, Monkeys on the Bed, and Scum).  Then Derek went to bed and the kids and I played Battleship.  It is fun to see Ben coming into his own with playing games.
We rang in the new year at like 8:30 and went to bed.  I didn't even hear the fireworks at midnight.
But I couldn't be happier to have a fresh start.
I didn't go to the spa this week, first time in several years.  But I cleaned and put away Christmas, wrote my 19 for 2019 goal list, worked on stuff for school.  I also got a massage, a mammogram and had a dentist appointment all in the same day.  I started a new round of PT to try to fix my headaches/trap/shoulder issue (maybe my bicep tendon creating impingement as causal agent, and I am feeling better already).
Bring it on 2019.

Randall Family Christmas

We finished opening gifts before we headed to the airport on Sunday after church.  Derek (of course) had a use of force that made him late getting home.  The kids weren't excited about waiting.  Thankfully Santa didn't wait for Dad. They are excited about our Spring Break trip to Great Wolf Lodge!  Santa even brought each of them a small stuffed wolf!
We haven't been to Utah for Christmas in 4 years.  Yet again this year I was dragging my feet on buying the plane tickets.  The weather is so dicey, and the plane tickets so expensive.  But as soon as I found out that my mom was going to have surgery on Nov. 15th, I bought plane tickets for the whole family so I could be there to help her at Christmas time.  I didn't want her to over do it.  I'm so glad I bought those tickets when I did.  Since she ended up having a whole different Christmas than the at home convalescence that we anticipated.  But it was so good that we all got to be there at the hospital with her.  (And that we didn't have to pay last minute ticket prices!)

A 7 pm flight seemed like a good idea.  But then it didn't take off until 10 pm.  It was a rough start to the trip.  The door had a sealing issue causing cabin pressure problems.  This is a theme in Derek's travels.  So annoying.  But we managed to keep spirits high.  Derek and I would just laugh every time another text came in with an updated delay status.
They gave us free snacks.  As they boarded us.  Maybe would have been nice in the 3 hour wait.
For the week to be described as chaotic would be accurate.  11 grandkids, (4 of them under 1).  3 toddlers (who all want the same toy at the same time), lots of grown ups.  Last minute gifts to buy, stockings to fill, trips to the hospital, cooking, cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning.  It was nuts.

But it was so good.

So much cousin time!  And most of it hanging out at Mimi and Papa's.

More cousin time!

We kept the Christmas breakfast tradition alive.  Pull-A-Parts and Christmas Eggs.

We had a classic Randall Chuck-A-Rama meal.  Ben ate 4 helpings of ice cream.

Dave was supposed to arrive an hour after us.  Once we were delayed we had a little wager about who would arrive first.  We lost.  So we had to buy Twisted Sugar.  My mom got in on the facebook chat for the first time since her surgery when I told Dave he was a jerk for getting to board.  She wrote "a special gift is kindness."  It made me so happy to see her chiming in as her normal-amazing-mother self.

We worked on a few puzzles in my  mom's room when she was in the regular Thoracic wing of the hospital.  When she was getting moved to ICU, we had to rapidly finish the Logan puzzle I got my dad for Christmas so we could clean out the room.  Emily, Rachel and I got it done.  Libby did some good helping, with the puzzle.  Wearing my reading glasses over her own.

When I wasn't supervising, my kids were getting spoiled with sweets (ok, and even when I was supervising).  Uncle Davey bought Ben this donut.  He ate some of it every day for breakfast for about 4 days.

Christmas Day

Christmas eve and Christmas day were the BEST.  My mom looked so good.  She sounded good.  She could chomp down ice chips.  She was ready for the swallow test. Derek flew back to Seattle feeling like all was well.

And then...the nurse discovered that her chest incision (that she had just had the staples removed from) was oozing.  And it went downhill from there.  A fever, difficulty breathing.  A chest X-ray that showed some fluid.  She watched the nativity, complete with costumes that she sewed for each grandkid, in exhaustion because she finally gave in and asked for some pain meds for the pain in her chest.

That day and the next day were torture for her as she waited for surgery to explore the level of infection.  By the time she went in for surgery she could barely speak and breathing was a struggle.  It was hard to watch.  The nurses thought she was just having anxiety about the infection.  But it turns out they took  out 2 liters of infected fluid from off of her right lung.  That will put a damper on your breathing.

My sisters and I stayed with my dad all day (Brad, my brother in law, deserves a medal for his babysitting feats during the week.)

After they cleaned out the infection (she calls this "power washing") she started to feel better.  She was back in ICU again with more attentive nursing (1:2 ratio versus the other floor where it was 1:5).  They put a wound vac on all her incisions (it turns out that none of them had healed--they assume due to malnutrition because she couldn't get enough through her feeding tube without feeling nauseous).  This allowed her to continue draining, (so no fluid build up) and to have mobility.  She had to start from ground zero with her swallowing.  So that was frustrating.

It was hard to say goodbye on Sunday.  I wanted her to be in Rehab (where she was headed the day that she ended up back in ICU).  But her spirits are good.  She is determined to make it through this.  Since we left I have talked to her every day and just her voice lifts my spirits.  She is getting stronger every day, walking, talking, eating ice chips, and even a few bites of regular food.

The most tender moment was on Saturday.  My mom gave each kid an individual (what Ben called afterward) "Pep Talk."
They were all 3 deeply touched by her love and her words.  Libby cried after hers.  When we got in the car Ben suggested that they each share the things she said to them.  It was so sweet.
Libby was first.  Mimi told her to eat.  To make sure she ate enough so that she could have babies.  And she said she loved Libby for her talents and her "not talents."  In the car later Libby said that it was so special that Mimi said that, "because I have a lot of 'not talents.'"  So sweet!
Sarah went next.  Mimi told her that she should keep up all of her dancing and piano and singing.  She also told her that when Sarah was little, they weren't sure she would be a good singer (like uncle Davey) but that Sarah's voice has become so good (again like Uncle Davey).
Ben was the last to go.  Mimi told him that he has a voice like a bell and that he should keep singing.
I wish I would have put on my voice recorder.  There was so much more. My mother was really in matriarch mode.  It suits her well.

I am so thankful that she is still with us.  They are fighting the infection still with 2x a week "powerwashing" and lots of antibiotics.  They've changed her feeding and added some protein supplementation to help her heal.
I got her a necklace that says "She Never Gives Up."  And that's how I feel.  She's gonna beat this!

Norton Family Christmas 2018

Since we were headed to Utah, we had a pre-Christmas Eve Christmas Eve celebration, complete with clam chowder, donuts, hot chocolate, and the candy cane toss game.

Derek and I did a lot of shopping on that day (the 22nd) so that we had all the food. Then we had to go back and get all the paper goods.  Planning hasn't been my strength this season.  But we ate, opened gifts and enjoyed all the love of the season.

We sang a few carols and had a good time.  I'm so thankful for our Norton family.

This actually Ben's white elephant from Derek's work party.  But he was so delighted to drink his hot cocoa from it.

The aunts and uncles hit it out of the park with their fun gifts for our family.  I feel so blessed!
